Knowing the minimum pass score for each EPSO test is the starting point of any serious preparation. But the minimum and the qualifying score are two different things — and confusing them is one of the most costly mistakes candidates make.

This guide covers the exact pass scores for EPSO AD5 2026, how the combined scoring system works, and what scores you realistically need to progress.

EPSO AD5 2026 Pass Scores — Complete Table

TestQuestionsTimeMin Pass ScoreType
Verbal Reasoning2035 min10/20Individual minimum
Numerical Reasoning1020 minCombined with Abstract
Abstract Reasoning1010 minCombined with Numerical
EU Knowledge3040 min15/30Individual minimum
Digital Skills4030 min20/40Individual minimum

Combined threshold: Numerical and Abstract Reasoning are assessed together. Scoring very well on one can partially compensate for a weaker result on the other — but the combined score must still reach the minimum.

What "Individual Minimum" Actually Means

Verbal Reasoning — 10/20 Scoring below 10 on Verbal Reasoning eliminates you from the competition immediately, regardless of your scores on all other tests. This is the most consequential threshold because it is the only test where a single below-minimum score causes outright elimination at that stage.

EU Knowledge — 15/30 A minimum of 15 correct answers out of 30 is required. Scoring 14 eliminates you even if you achieved perfect scores on all reasoning tests.

Digital Skills — 20/40 40 questions in 30 minutes, individual minimum of 20/40. No compensation from other tests.

The Numerical + Abstract Combined Threshold

Numerical Reasoning (10 questions) and Abstract Reasoning (10 questions) do not have individual pass scores. Their marks are combined for a single threshold.

In practice: if you score 3/10 on Numerical but 8/10 on Abstract, your combined score of 11/20 meets the threshold. If you score 4/10 on both, your combined 8/20 does not.

The combined minimum for EPSO/AD/427/26 is 10/20. This is set out explicitly in the competition notice.

The Difference Between "Pass" and "Qualify"

This is the critical point most preparation guides do not make clearly enough.

Passing means meeting every individual and combined minimum threshold.

Qualifying means ranking high enough among all passing candidates to be invited to the next stage.

In the EPSO AD5 2026 competition, 174,922 candidates applied for 1,490 reserve list places. Not all 174,922 took the tests — but those who did and passed all minimums still competed for a limited number of progression slots.

In recent EPSO AD competitions, the effective qualifying score for Verbal Reasoning has been 14–16/20, not 10/20. The minimum exists to filter out the lowest performers, but clearing it does not mean you progress.

What this means for preparation: Do not aim for the minimum. Aim for a score that puts you in the top 5–10% of candidates who pass the minimum.

Target Scores for a Realistic Chance of Qualification

These are estimates based on the structure and competitiveness of comparable EPSO AD competitions. EPSO does not publish cut scores in advance.

TestMinimum to PassRealistic Qualifying Target
Verbal Reasoning10/2015–17/20
Numerical Reasoning— (combined)7–8/10
Abstract Reasoning— (combined)7–8/10
EU Knowledge15/3022–25/30
Digital Skills20/4027–32/40

The most competitive tests are typically Verbal Reasoning (high weight, individual threshold, large variance) and EU Knowledge (broad factual content, Language 2 for most candidates).

How EPSO Calculates the Final Pre-Selection Score

EPSO applies a weighting formula to the combined scores of all five tests to produce a single ranking score. The exact weighting is published in the competition notice for EPSO/AD/427/26.

The weighted total determines your ranking relative to all other candidates who passed all minimum thresholds. Only candidates ranked above the cut-off line — which is determined by the number of available progression slots, not by a fixed score — receive an invitation to the Assessment Centre.

What Happens After Pre-Selection

Candidates who pass pre-selection and rank highly enough are invited to the Assessment Centre. This stage includes:

  • EUFTE (Free-Text Essay): A structured written exercise in Language 2, assessed at the Assessment Centre stage
  • Competency-based interviews
  • Group exercises (depending on the competition profile)

The Assessment Centre tests different competencies from the pre-selection tests — but you cannot reach it without first passing pre-selection.

Using Your Score to Diagnose Preparation Gaps

The most efficient way to identify where your preparation needs work is to take a diagnostic test before studying. A diagnostic across all five test categories tells you:

  • Which tests are below the minimum threshold (requiring urgent work)
  • Which tests are above the minimum but below qualifying range (requiring targeted improvement)
  • Which tests you can maintain with lighter practice

EPSOready's free diagnostic gives you a predicted score for each category in 25 questions — no account required. Use it at the start of your preparation, then again after 3–4 weeks of practice to measure progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum score to pass EPSO Verbal Reasoning? 10 out of 20 correct answers. Scoring below 10 eliminates you from the competition regardless of performance on other tests.

What is the minimum score to pass EPSO EU Knowledge? 15 out of 30 correct answers. This is an individual minimum — it cannot be compensated by high scores on other tests.

Do Numerical and Abstract Reasoning have separate pass scores? No. Numerical and Abstract Reasoning are assessed on a combined basis. Neither test has a standalone pass threshold, but the combined score must reach a minimum set by EPSO.

Is passing the EPSO minimum score enough to progress? Not in practice. The minimum score eliminates the weakest candidates, but with 174,922 applicants for 1,490 places, only the top-ranking candidates who passed all minimums advance. The effective qualifying score in competitive AD competitions is significantly above the stated minimum.

Where can I find the official pass scores for EPSO AD5 2026? The competition notice for EPSO/AD/427/26 contains the official scoring rules and individual test weights. It is available on the official EPSO website.
