If you are preparing for the EPSO AD5 2026 competition, the most useful thing you can do before starting a full preparation plan is take a practice test that actually resembles the real exam.

This article explains what to expect from a free EPSO practice test, why the test format matters as much as the questions, and how to use your results to prioritise your preparation.

What a Good Free EPSO Practice Test Includes

Not all practice tests are equal. A useful free EPSO test should:

  • Cover all five test categories tested in the EPSO AD5 pre-selection: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, EU Knowledge, and Digital Skills
  • Use a TAO simulator format — including a timer, question navigation, and the ability to flag questions to revisit
  • Give you a result that is actually useful — a predicted score per category, not just a total percentage
  • Require no account or payment to complete

EPSOready's free diagnostic test meets all of these criteria. It gives you 25 questions — 5 per category — in a simulator that closely resembles the official EPSO environment, with a predicted score and a personalised preparation plan at the end.

Why the Test Format Matters

Most free EPSO practice tests available online are just question banks with no timer and no interface. They test whether you know the answer — not whether you can find it in time, in an unfamiliar interface, under real exam pressure.

The EPSO pre-selection tests are delivered through the TAO platform (Testing Assisté par Ordinateur). TAO has a specific layout: a timer displayed at the top, a flagging system that lets you mark questions to return to, a progress bar, and an on-screen calculator available during Numerical Reasoning.

Candidates who have never used TAO before their exam day consistently lose time discovering the interface while the clock is running. Practising in a TAO simulator eliminates this disadvantage.

The 5 Test Categories — What to Expect

Verbal Reasoning

20 questions, 35 minutes. Each question presents a short passage followed by a statement. Your answer must be True, False, or Cannot Say — based only on the passage, never on outside knowledge. The most common mistake is confusing "False" with "Cannot Say."

Numerical Reasoning

10 questions, 20 minutes. Each question requires you to extract and calculate information from a table, chart, or graph. A calculator is provided in the TAO interface — use it. The difficulty is usually speed, not mathematics.

Abstract Reasoning

10 questions, 10 minutes. You are shown a sequence of geometric shapes and must identify the pattern. With exactly 60 seconds per question, checking the simplest transformation first (rotation, number of elements, shading) is faster than over-analysing complex combinations.

EU Knowledge

30 questions, 40 min. Multiple-choice questions on EU institutions, treaties, policies, and history. Individual minimum pass score: 15/30. EPSOready's free EU Knowledge Course covers all 17 topic areas.

Digital Skills

40 questions, 30 min. Scenario-based questions on spreadsheets, cybersecurity, online collaboration, and digital tools. Individual minimum: 20/40.

How to Use Your Free Practice Test Results

A diagnostic test is only useful if you act on the results. After completing the free EPSO practice test:

1. Identify your weakest category Your lowest predicted score is where preparation time will give you the highest return. Verbal and Numerical Reasoning improve with structured practice over 4–6 weeks. EU Knowledge and Digital Skills are more about memorisation and can be left for the final 3–4 weeks of preparation.

2. Check your time management Did you finish all questions in each category? If you ran out of time, that is a separate problem from accuracy — and it requires different practice (timed sessions, flagging strategy, not over-spending on single questions).

3. Set a realistic target The stated EPSO minimum pass scores are not the qualifying threshold. With 174,922 candidates for 1,490 places in the AD5 2026 competition, the effective qualifying score is significantly higher. For context: a realistic target for Verbal Reasoning is 15–17/20, not the stated minimum of 10/20.

What Separates Candidates Who Pass

Based on experience with the EPSO selection process, the candidates who pass share a few common traits:

  • They practice in the right format — timed, in a TAO-like interface, not on paper or generic quiz sites
  • They take a diagnostic test first and focus preparation on their weakest categories
  • They understand the scoring rules for each test (especially True/False/Cannot Say in Verbal, and the combined threshold for Numerical + Abstract)
  • They use the answer elimination feature during practice — crossing out options already ruled out reduces cognitive load and speeds up decisions under pressure
  • They leave EU Knowledge preparation for the final 3–4 weeks, after building reasoning skills

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the free EPSO practice test really free? Yes. EPSOready's diagnostic test is completely free — no account required, no credit card, no email needed. You receive results immediately after completing the test.

How many questions are in the free test? The free diagnostic includes 25 questions: 5 per test category (Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, EU Knowledge, Digital Skills).

Does it use the real TAO interface? EPSOready uses a TAO simulator, including the timer, question navigation, flagging system, and on-screen calculator. It is not the official platform, but it is designed to prepare you for it.

What do I get at the end? A predicted score per category, a comparison to the EPSO pass thresholds, and a personalised preparation plan showing which areas to prioritise.

Where can I find more free EPSO practice questions? EPSOready's EU Knowledge Course is free and covers all 17 topic areas tested in the EPSO EU Knowledge exam — no account or payment required.
